When you want to spend time outside, maybe go for a long walk, go to the park, or simply can't be bothered to spend too much time away from your terrace I suggest this simple snack/lunch!
What makes it great?? It doesn't need many ingredients, only the ones that YOU choose (or can find in your fridge)!
Fun fact of the day: The "Sub" as a name does not primarily refer to the large green/yellow retailer that offers customers the opportunity to "eat fresh" fast-food...NO! It originates from the name Submarine Sandwich, a food offered to Navy servicemen in the U.S. in WWI.
Ingredients (per Sub):
Really depends on dietary requirements and preference, however here are a few suggestions:
- Small Baguettes, Hot Dog Rolls, ...
- handful of Spinach leaves
- Cheddar
- Bacon
- Tomatoes
- Garlic Sauce (recipe below)
- Ketchup
- Wholegrain Mustard
- Salt, Pepper, Italian Mixed Herbs
Preparation:
The idea is that it is easy to make, easy to transport and/or a quick snack.
So whether you want to toast your bread, make your own garlic sauce, use ham or cook some bacon - it's up to you to make your Sub great! :)
Also, it's not so much about the cheese or the meat. What makes sandwiches special are the sauces, mustards, pickles, herbs, chutneys or oils you use to spice up the layers!
To make home-made Garlic Sauce just mix some yoghurt (pref. greek style) with chopped up
Garlic, add Olive oil, Salt, Pepper and fresh Herbs like Chives or Basil
or some mixed dry herbs. Done!
So, find some ham and cheese, grill some bacon, add an egg (or not) and layer away.
! Secret tip though: layer the tomato in the middle and spread chutneys, sauces or dips between two layers, to keep the bread from getting soggy!
Combining sweet and sour and different textures is the secret to every sandwich, so try the bacon with some sweet mango chutney or use some cream cheese with spinach between your crunchy toasted baguette! The combinations are endless.
Also try strong cheeses, like Rochefort and add some crushed Walnuts with that leftover ham. Or layer some fruit like apple or strawberry with white meats like turkey or chicken.
